The Los Angeles Kings needed over time to win the first two games of the series at the Staples Center and take a solid 2-0 lead to New York. At Madison Square Garden the New York Rangers were hoping they could get back in the Stanley Cup finals race with a win on their home ice.

More from Los Angeles Kings

In the first period, Jeff Carter put the Kings on the board with a buzzer-beating shot to take an early lead and instill a bit of panic in the Rangers. Instead of going into the locker room 0-0, they had to go back to the locker room for the intermission down 1-0 with a goal literally in the final second of the period.

The Rangers weren’t able to get back into the game after a goal from Jake Muzzin in the first five minutes of the second period. Then in the final three minutes of the period Mike Richards added another goal to give the Kings a 3-0 lead heading into the final period. Things got a bit chippy in the second period with each team getting three penalties, including one for elbowing and slashing.

That score line held to till the end of the game and puts the Rangers on the bring of elimination in a 0-3 whole. It also has the Kings on the verge of another Stanley Cup win and a sweep, the first in the Stanley Cup Finals in 14 years.

Game Four will be played on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden at 8:00 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network.
