It’s unclear if the plan was to remain with Xbox through it’s original tenure, but according to the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft may be losing a exlusive as the sequel to Titanfall a.k.a. Titanfall 2 may be coming to the Playstation 4.
Microsoft has benefited from the Xbox-exclusive shooting game “Titanfall” from Electronic Arts Inc., which was the best-selling title of March and April in the U.S. But its follow-up game, which is in the planning stages, also will be available for the PS4, a person close to the development effort said. EA declined to comment.
Since 2013, console exclusivity has been a big topic of discussion regarding Titanfall. In October of 2013, Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen stated that Titanfall would be a Microsoft exclusive.
“In the case of Titanfall, it’s a brand new IP, and it’s exclusive only for the life of the title on Xbox One and Xbox 360 and PCs”.
But following the release of Titanfall in March of 2014, rumors began to spark that Microsoft would be losing it’s exclusivity for the video game franchise via Polygon.
Our sources also tell us that the next Titanfall will not be a Microsoft exclusive. The original Titanfall was exclusive to Microsoft platforms: Xbox 360, Xbox One and Windows PC.
Based on how well the Xbox One has performed in regards to sales, it’s hard to think that losing Titanfall to Sony won’t be a huge loss unless the system picks it up. While the Playstation 4 has continued to outsell the Xbox One, Titanfall has dominated the video game market, as its the highest selling game of 2014, just ahead of Call of Duty: Ghosts and NBA 2K14. Of the three, only Titanfall is a console exclusive.
Hopefully, by the time Titanfall 2‘s release, the Xbox One’s sales will have picked up or the Playstation 4 will continue to gain ground in the ongoing sales competition.
