The Tampa Bay Lightning have announced the re-signing of forward Ondrej Palat to a three-year contract according to vice president and general manager Steve Yzerman.
Palat will earn $10 million over the next three years; breaking down into $2.8 next season, $3.2 million during the 2015-16 season and $4 million in 2016-17.
Palat played in 81 games last season with the Lightning and had 23 goals and 59 points and a plus-32 rating. He was named a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy as NHL rookie of the year. The winner will be announced Tuesday and Palat is running against Tyler Johnson also from the Lightning and Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche.
Palat ranked second among all NHL rookies in points and third in goals. He also became the third player in franchise history to finish the 2013-14 season with a plus-minus rating greater than plus-30.
When asked about his breakout season, Palat said, “I didn’t expect it at all. I thought I’d be on the third or fourth line, maybe a healthy scratch.”
NHL Rookie of the Month honors were awarded to Palat in both January and March of last season. He recorded a rookie franchise best with an eight game point streak between December 23 and January 9 and had a total of four goals and six assists.
Palat has played a total of 95 NHL games with the Lightning over the course of his career and has a total of 25 goals, 63 points and a plus-37 rating. He also had two goals and three points in the Stanley Cup Finals.
