Mark Richt doesn’t plan on RB Todd Gurley getting overworked

Todd Gurley is the steam locomotive that pulls the Georgia Bulldogs offense. When he’s in (and healthy) they pound the ball as good as anyone in the nation. But could that lead to Mark Richt leaning too heavily on his star tailback?

Gurley, who is coming off an injury-riddled 2013 campaign, will need to be there for Georgia to make a championship run, but Richt understands the importance of him being fresh and not overworked too.

“If he’s healthy, he’s gonna make great runs. I mean you’ve gotta give him the ball,” Richt told the Macon Telegraph.. “We’ve done a pretty good job of throwing the ball to him. But Keith Marshall’s pretty talented, obviously. Brendan Douglas, we like what he did. We’ve got a couple highly-touted guys coming in, I wanna see what they can do.

“So are we gonna give it to (Gurley) 30 times a game and wear him to a nub, no. But there may be a game or two where he’s feeling in, and we’ve got momentum, and he’s pounding, we’re gonna let him pound. But Douglas pounds pretty good too. Keith Marshall can hit a home run at any moment. So we’ll use all those guys.”

It’s likely that Gurley — who Gurley has rushed for 2,374 yards on an SEC-high 387 carries in two seasons — will want to showcase his talents as much as possible, as this will probably be his last season in a Georgia uniform. The 6-foot-1, 230 pound bruising back is already projected as a first round draft pick, and if he helps to bring any type of title or ring the Bulldogs at all this season, that is surely going to jump up to a top 5 pick.
