Unfortunately after what promises to be an incredible 2014 World Cup in Brazil, we have to wait another four years to see the sports greatest tournament again. The 2018 edition of the World Cup is being hosted in Russia, just four years after they also hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

The tournament will be held from June 8th to July 8th. It is also the first time Russia will host the tournament, and they automatically qualify as the host nation.

It will be interesting to see if Russia is more prepared for the World Cup than it was the Olympics and if journalists and athletes will run into the same problems at hotels as they did in Sochi. Oddly enough Sochi is hosting World Cup games at the stadium built for the Olympics.

Russia is also hosting the 2017 Confederations Cup so they get a trial run before the World Cup.

Aside from Sochi, the 2018 FIFA World Cup will take place in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Samara, Saransk, Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don and Ekaterinburg.

“The confirmation of the host cities is our first significant step on the road to the 2018 FIFA World Cup,” FIFA President Sepp Blatter said at a ceremony announcing the host cities in December of 2012. “It is very much the contribution made by the cities which determines the success of this massive sporting event.

“We are looking forward to fruitful cooperation in planning for the first FIFA World Cup to take place in eastern Europe,” Blatter continued.

“We’re pleased with the speed of preparations for the tournament which the Russia 2018 LOC has delivered ever since the host nation for the tournament was announced in December 2010. These sorts of achievements exemplify their enthusiasm and their responsible approach to the matter in hand.”
