Her character may have not made it out of the original Avatar film alive, but Sigourney Weaver will indeed be returning to the franchise in all three sequels to the blockbuster film.
As most of you who have seen the visually stunning film Avatar, you know that Sigourney Weaver’s character Grace Augustine did not make it out alive; however, that small detail will not keep the actress from appearing in the upcoming Avatar sequels, the first of which is set to premiere in December of 2016.
According to Variety, she will be returning as a new character in the film. Director James Cameron offered a little bit of insight into the casting.
“Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made ‘Aliens,’” Cameron told Variety. “We’re good friends who’ve always worked well together, so it just feels right that she’s coming back for the Avatar sequels. Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she’s playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films.”
Unfortunately, this is about the details come to an end. Cameron does not elaborate on what character Weaver will actually be playing in the three upcoming sequels.
According to Cameron, each of the three sequels will be filmed back to back, much like The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter films did, and will be released in December of 2016, 2017, and 2018.
It was announced in January that Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana would be reprising their roles as Jake Sully and Neytiri, so it looks like the old gang is back together again for the new film.
Right now, there is no definitive release date for the first of the three sequels; however, one would imagine that as production kicks into high gear, we should know a little bit more about the film’s arrival date, casting, and all those sorts of things.
