Atlanta Falcons to be profiled on HBO's Hard Knocks in 2014

HBO’s documentary series “Hard Knocks” has been a favorite of fans and the critics for a while, but it hasn’t always gone over well with NFL teams. It has featured the likes of the Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets and the Cincinnati Bengals this past season. On Thursday, it was announced that the Atlanta Falcons would be the new subjects of the show.

What is perhaps most surprising isn’t that an NFL team is doing this show, because the NFL has guaranteed a participant will happen. However, it appears that the Atlanta Falcons have stepped up and taken one for the team. Yes, that’s right, the Falcons actually volunteered for the gig in 2014.

After receiving lukewarm responses from teams in the past, the NFL owners put in place a rule this past season that would allow them to force a team to participate in the show if there were no volunteers.

With Atlanta volunteering, no one will be forced in to the gig this season. What remains to be seen is if this once popular and engaging show can get back to those roots. The Miami Dolphins version in 2012 was roundly panned as flat-out boring, and even the once dysfunctional Bengals weren’t exactly high-drama this past training camp.
