The 2014 World Cup kicks off on Thursday and it is still hard to believe that Landon Donovan won’t be in Brazil representing the red, white and blue. Since Donovan isn’t with the rest of the team in Brazil and left back in the United States with the rest of us, Donovan is still at the office like your average Joe.
The only problem is everyone else took off for the 2014 World Cup and to watch the games, but no one let Donovan know. He is left at the office alone answering a seemingly never ending line of phone calls, placing one after the other on hold.
During some free time he works his way over to the foosball table and plays a little by himself.
What makes it even sadder is that he is doing all of this in his United States men’s national team uniform.
Of course Donovan will actually be pretty busy during the 2014 World Cup, helping ESPN with their media coverage of the tournament.
“Adding Landon to our ESPN roster just before the World Cup is a coup because he knows the United States team better than anyone having played such a huge role in its success, especially at this event,” said Jed Drake, ESPN senior vice president and executive producer. “Landon is also one of this country’s biggest sports stars and we believe that he will help attract even more fans to our month-long coverage.”
Added Donovan: “I am excited to be joining ESPN’s coverage of the 2014 World Cup from Los Angeles, and I look forward to working with the talented ESPN broadcasters to provide unique insights for our amazing US Soccer fans.”
