The welterweight division in the UFC is absolutely stacked with talented fighters from top to bottom. It is one of the few divisions in the UFC where there are still impressive fighters outside of the top 15 ranked athletes.
Two of the men looking to break into the rankings are former title challenger Thiago Alves, and rising prospect Jordan Mein. According to Fox Sports, the two men will face off against each other on August 23rd in Tulsa, Oklahoma at UFC Fight Night 49.
This fight has major consequences for both men as they look to make a run to the top of the crowded welterweight ladder. An impressive win for either man will likely catapult him into the rankings, and earn him a shot at a top tier opponent.
Alves recently returned to the Octagon in April at UFC on FOX 11 after a two year injury hiatus. In a stunning performance, Alves looked like he had not missed a beat as he battered Seth Baczynski en route to a unanimous decision victory and a fight of the night bonus.
Alves’ performance brought back memories of his dominance back in 2006-2009 when he notched seven straight victories before dropping a decision to Georges St-Pierre in their title fight at UFC 100.
Mein also returned to the Octagon at UFC on FOX 11 after a year long hiatus. He picked up his second UFC victory when he defeated Hernani Perpetuo by split decision on the preliminary portion of the card.
This fight has all the makings of a fight of the night candidate. Who do you think will win? Let us know in the comments below, or on Twitter @SchlinskMMA.
