World Cup 2014: Will USA advance past group stage?


The 2014 FIFA World Cup kicks off on Thursday afternoon, and all eyes in the states will be on how far the USA men’s national team will advance. The USA sits in Group G, which has been labeled this year’s “Group of Death,” alongside world powerhouses and tournament favorites Germany and Portugal.

There are very few who are giving the USMNT a shot at advancing past the group stage in this year’s tournament, including the oddsmakers in Las Vegas.

The USA kicks off their campaign in Brazil on Monday, June 16, at 6:00 p.m. ET against Ghana at Estádio das Dunas in Natal, Brazil.

To Win Group G

Germany: $175 wins $100 (57% chance)
Portugal: $100 wins $250 (26% chance)
Ghana: $100 wins $900 (9% chance)
United States: $100 wins $1000 (8% chance)

Will USA Qualify from Group G?

YES: $100 wins $275 (26% chance)
NO: $325 wins $100 (74% chance)

While the United States is certainly viewed as a long shot in this year’s tournament, part of the excitement of sports is that anything can happen.

It won’t be easy for the United States to win Group G, but you can guarantee the USMNT will come out looking to shake up the bracket and go on a deep run. Whether or not they will be successful remains to be seen.
