Report: Carmelo Anthony will opt out of contract on July 1

One of the biggest questions facing the New York Knicks this offseason is whether or not they’ll be able to convince Carmelo Anthony to not opt out of his contract and if he does, will they be able to convince him to re-sign in New York over all the other options he’s going to get.

While it was looking like the Knicks spin machine was doing a good job of making us all think that Melo was going to not only stay with the team but not even opt out of the final year of his deal, things are a little bit different than they appear.

According to Frank Isola from the New York Daily News, barring some crazy scenario, Carmelo Anthony will opt-out of his contract with the Knicks on July 1st and become a free agent.

"Carmelo Anthony hasn’t wavered from his year-long intent to become a free agent this summer despite Phil Jackson’s hopes to keep Anthony under contract through the 2014-15 season.Barring a dramatic change of heart, Anthony will opt out of his contract on July 1 and become an unrestricted free agent, the Daily News has learned."

This isn’t anything we didn’t expect to happen as Melo’s best option has always been to opt out and ponder his best options. New York can offer Melo the most money but probably the worst situation he’ll have offered to him as even the Houston Rockets and Phoenix Suns have more upside than the Knicks do next season.

It’s going to be interesting to see where Melo goes, but he’ll be shopping himself around the league which is the smartest thing he can do.
