Tom Hiddleston has played many things. He has been a man, a vampire in Only Lovers Left Alive, and even a God as Thor’s misguided brother Loki in Thor, Thor: The Dark World, and The Avengers; however, the one thing he hasn’t been is a country music legend.
Interestingly enough, that is all about to change.
According to Deadline, the British actor is set to play country music legend Hank Williams in the upcoming film I Saw the Light. To make matters even more interesting, Hiddleston will even be singing in the new film.
It is reported that he will sing some of Hank’s greatest hits like “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” and “Hey Good Lookin’.”
I Saw the Light will tell the story of the legendary country star from his rise to fame to his untimely death at 29 years of age from heart failure.
While I was initially shocked by the casting, the more I think about it, the more I can see Hiddleston pulling it off. As of late, he has been type casted in many people’s eyes as Thor’s mischievous brother Loki and many people can’t see beyond that; however, Hiddleston is an incredibly talented actor with a pretty wide range and the ability to completely immerse himself in a character until he essentially becomes said character.
The film is being directed by Marc Abraham, who also wrote the script for the film. The script is based off of “Hank Williams: The Biography” by author Colin Escott.
There is currently no word on who will co-star with Hiddleston in the new film or any specific plot points in the film. The production is set to begin filming in October in Louisiana; however, there is no definitive release date for the film just yet.
I Saw the Light is still in the very early stages of development, so this is the main reason for the current lack of information. As you know, things in Hollywood change pretty regularly. So, as we get closer and closer to the film’s eventual release, we should know a little more detail as to what we can expect.
Until then, what are your thoughts on the new film? Is I Saw the Light something you can see yourself heading to theaters to see? Do you think Tom Hiddleston can pull off one of the greatest country music singers of all time? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
