When round 3 of the U.S. Open tees off from Pinehurst No. 2 on Saturday, there will only be one amateur golfer left in the field. Reigning U.S. Amateur Champion Matt Fitzpatrick was the only non-professional to make the cut on Friday.

More from US Open Golf

Playing in a group with Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose, Fitzpatrick shot a 73 on Friday to sneak into the weekend. The only amateur left in the U.S. Open field won’t be an amateur much longer as he plans to go pro next week at the Irish Open.

Here’s what Fitzpatrick said when asked if he was ready to go pro:

"I think I’ve still got a bit to go. I think everyone can say that, I guess, whether they’re trying to win a major, keep their card or win their first event. But for me, at the minute, it’s just trying to keep on making cuts and taking it from there, really."

Well he’s good enough to hang with the big boys at the U.S. Open, so I guess he can handle the grind of playing pro golf. Fitzpatrick and everyone else is looking up at Martin Kaymer who holds a 6-shot lead going into Saturday after posting a record breaking 130 in rounds 1 and 2.

It’s Martin Kaymer’s tournament to lose, kids.
