Colombia might be the favorites in Group C coming into the 2014 World Cup, but injuries before the tournament have hit the team hard. Amongst those injured is superstar striker Radamel Falcao and veteran defender Luis Perea.

More from World Cup

“That day we were suffering and it was not something that was said to make a good impression; it came from inside,” said Colombian coach José Pékerman, via The Guardian.

“This is a serious group, it is a family. Perea and Falcao will be with us. They could have gone on holiday but they decided to come with the group because they are never away from us and a part of us. This has always been a close-knit team, a family, and in any family you have to deal with problems.

“We have dealt with our problems and now we are not thinking about what is behind us but the potential of this team.

“Any team in the world would love to have Falcao as its striker but we are strong, we can deal with this and with the game against Greece. You will see for yourself.

“To play for the national team requires a different mentality and the players have accepted that. We have so many good strikers and they must know the coach loves them and will not abandon them. We have never lost our solidarity in the face of something so difficult.”

Greece isn’t a weak team and more than capable of advancing out of Group C to the World Cup knockout rounds.
