Geno Smith: It’s about ‘perfecting’ Jets’ offense
By Mike Dyce
The New York Jets had their quarterback controversy settled for them last season when Mark Sanchez injured his shoulder and he was out for the season. That threw rookie Geno Smith to the wolves and in his second season he is looking to take a step forward as he transitions from “learning the offense” to “perfecting it.”

“Last year I was a rookie. I was learning. I’m still learning, but I was learning the offense,” Smith said Saturday, via the New York Post. “I know the offense. Now, it’s about perfecting it. There’s really no comparison. It’s completely night and day.”
One of the biggest issues for Smith during the 2013 season, aside from his inconsistent and erratic play, was his frequent turnovers. Smith turned the ball over a staggering 25 times as a rookie. Smith says he has been working on chemistry with his teammates while “perfecting” the offense and the Jets are ahead of where they were last year.
“I can see it this year. It’s night and day because I can coach guys up on where I need them to be,” Smith said. ” … That’s what quarterbacking is. It’s about being the coach on the field. That’s the position we’re in right now. We’re still building. We’re still developing that chemistry, but as of right now, we’re levels ahead of where we were at this time last year.”
Part of that is because the Jets helped bring in some weapons for Smith, like former Denver Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker and former Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson.
While everyone is saying Geno Smith is still the Jets’ quarterback, don’t forget they also signed veteran Michael Vick. There could be another quarterback competition this offseason.
