In the movies, just when things can’t get any worse, it starts raining. Well, this is a lot like that. Portugal was down 3-0 to Germany in their first appearance in the World Cup. They sit in incredibly competitive Group G, the “Group of Death.” They lost one of their best defenders, Pepe, to a red card.
Then, their two defenders ran into each other. The collision had no consequences. It was harmless in relative terms. But it serves as a nice metaphor for Portugal’s performance. Portugal is discombobulated and unimpressive. They are on the biggest stage of soccer and they can even track down a loose ball in their own box.
They are getting in their own way.
Germany has been quite impressive in this match, putting up two of their three goals before Pepe’s red card. They have since coasted with their advantage.
This doesn’t mean Portugal can’t get out of Group G. They have a great deal of talent, and perhaps the best player in the world, Christiano Ronaldo. They need to swallow this defeat and recover by the time they face the US on the June 22. The US may just be the perfect team for Portugal to beat up and gain some confidence heading forward.
