Arizona United vs. Los Angeles Galaxy: 10 Bold Predictions

Recent history has shown that Bruce Arena’s Los Angeles Galaxy have not been taking the U.S. Open Cup as seriously as they should be. As this is, allegedly, the easiest way to get to the CONCACAF Champions League, the Galaxy must go with all hands on deck against Michael Dellorusso’s Arizona United at the Peoria Sports Complex in Peoria, Ariz. on June 18, especially with the Galaxy on a World Cup break.

The silver lining for Los Angeles is that Arizona United is not the Carolina RailHawks, who the Galaxy will face in the next round on the road if they prevail. Assuming the Galaxy do field their strongest side, that will, in fact, be done. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. PT/10:30 p.m. ET and will be televised by Time Warner Cable Deportes. Here are 10 Bold Predictions for Wednesday night’s match between Arizona United and the Los Angeles Galaxy.

1. Evan Newton with at least four saves

Arizona goalkeeper Evan Newton has 48 saves so far this year, and against the Galaxy, he will frustrate their attack with at least four saves on the night.

2. A Top performance from Jonathan

Arizona United forward Jonathan Top will score the only goal of the night for the hosts. He only has two goals this season, but he can shoot and finish. The reason it will be the only goal is that the Los Angeles Galaxy are boldly predicted to send the house on Arizona United.

3. Brian Rowe to make under five saves

On the other hand, it will be a bit of a surprise if Jaime Penedo gets the start against Arizona United. This is a chance for backup Brian Rowe to get the nod and deliver a strong performance. Rowe will make under five saves in this game.

4. A brace for Robbie Keane

If there is one thing Robbie Keane shines in, aside from the usuals, it’s scoring in matches where tournament progression is at stake. If Keane gets the start, this will be a difficult ask for defenders like London Woodberry and Scott Morrison. Robbie Keane is Robbie Keane, and Robbie Keane will score a brace. Enough said.

5. Landon Donovan with a goal and an assist

No league scoring record to worry about, no World Cup duties to worry about. The workload and pressure has lessened for Landon Donovan, but the desire to perform is there. Watch for Donovan to show that he still has it with a goal and an assist.

6. Smarten up, Gyasi Zardes

Los Angeles Galaxy forward Gyasi Zardes has only two goals in league play and would be better off working on his finishing skills with the Galaxy II, who play in the same league/division as Arizona United. It will be a meaningful target practice in the desert, but Zardes get one through.

7. Stefan Ishizaki with an assist

Galaxy midfielder Stefan Ishizaki has two goals and three assists in league play. Against a team from the third division of the American pyramid, the onus is on Ishizaki to showcase his class to the Peoria fans in attendance on Wednesday. Ishizaki gets at least one assist.

8. No goals or assists for Dan Gargan

One notable face for the Los Angeles Galaxy that will not get it done in this Open Cup match is defender Dan Gargan. He has three assists in league play but his defending is suspect, and his providing is not as consistent as it should be. There will no goals or assists for Gargan against Arizona United.

9. At least 40 fouls and five cards

Arizona United will be leaving everyone out on the field, and the Los Angeles Galaxy will need to engage in a really physical battle with Carolina waiting in the wings. At least 40 fouls will be whistles and at least five cards will be issued.

10. Los Angeles coasts to victory

The gulf in talent between Major League Soccer and USL Pro will be evident on Wednesday night at the Peoria Sports Complex. Despite the hosts Arizona United giving the Los Angeles Galaxy all they can handle, Arena’s men know they have some unfinished business to take care of in Cary, N.C.
