Anytime the UFC loses a major name such as Chuck Liddell, Anderson Silva, Brock Lesnar, or Georges St-Pierre, fans and pundits alike begin to inquire about who the next great superstar will be.
Who can carry the load of the UFC on their back and put on exceptional performances each and every fight so that fans will tune in?
According to Dana White, that man is none other than the UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.
At a media luncheon on Friday, Dana explained that the fighters are always going to be the UFC’s biggest stars, and Cain Velasquez may be the biggest of them all.
Cain Velasquez, too, we’re literally riding him down to Mexico. I wouldn’t even go to Mexico without Cain Velasquez. Cain Velasquez is a huge star, too. When you have an entire country that’s going to follow and support you, there’s nothing bigger than that.
You can argue it’s Jon Jones, it’s Ronda (Rousey), (but) they don’t have Canada riding on their backs. They don’t have Mexico riding on their backs. When you can get a whole country behind you, that’s when you know what a big star you are. Cain is, he’s the guy everyone cares about down there. Biggest press conference in Telavisa history when we went down there.
We have seen mega stars like Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva backed by their countries, and White believes Velasquez and Mexico are the next big things. With Cain being one of the most dominant champions already in UFC history, the final thing for him to do is stay healthy consistently.
