United States men’s national team head coach Jürgen Klinsmann made a controversial decision to leave Los Angeles Galaxy star Landon Donovan off his 23-man World Cup roster. While Donovan would surely rather be in Brazil instead of California, he seems to be making some kind of profit off of it by appearing in some ads.
The latest ad from EA Sports FIFA is arguably the best of the bunch. It shows Donovan at home trying to figure out what he is going to do while the rest of his American teammates are in Brazil playing the the World Cup.
He sits at a table eating breakfast next to a World Cup trophy replica, which he swipes off the table. He plays FIFA like so many Americans, and in his mode the digital Landon Donovan leads The United States to a World Cup title, and he looks at the camera with a “see what could’ve been” look.
The best part of the ad might be at the end in what looks like a deleted scene or outtake. It shows Donovan slouched back on his couch singing a popular American Outlaws song to himself, “We are going to Brazil!”
Except Donovan’s version is “I’m not going, I’m not going to Brazil.”
