After helping guide the Montreal Canadiens to the Eastern Conference Finals this season, captain Brian Gionta has a major decision to make. Does the Rochester, NY native remain in Montreal, or does he test his worth on the market as an unrestricted free agent.
According to his agent Steve Bartlett, the 35-year old Gionta and the organization have recently began to get into serious talks regarding whether or not Montreal is in Gionta’s future.
“We’re just kind of in discussions and the next probably few days will be critical to see (what happens),”Bartlett told NorthJersey.com. “We just kind of got serious about it in the last day or two, so we’ll kind of see what kind of progress we make on that one and whether he becomes a July 1 guy.”
Gionta just finished a five-year, $25-million contract with the Canadiens, and one has to wonder how much he values himself in terms of money. Despite recording 18 goals and 40 points in 81 games this past season, his average playing time dipped below 18 minutes per game.
Montreal also has decisions to make regarding the futures of P.K. Subban, Lars Eller and Andrei Markov, which could mean that Gionta becomes the odd man looking in. NHL Free Agency begins in less then two weeks, so it’s only a matter of time before a decision gets made.
