Playstation set on original drama series Powers
By Brian Miller
NBC tried it when they pushed their “Hero’s” series. They haven’t given up on that yet as they are ready to move forward with a reboot of that franchise. The CW network has found success with it’s series “Arrow” and are expecting much of the same with their next series “Flash”. Those are on network and cable channels. Readily available to cable and satellite subscribers and even to those still using antennas on top of their roofs. Now, Sony is in the process of developing their first drama series, “Powers”.

Powers is based on the superhero comic by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming. It will premiere on the Playstation Plus network in December, which means if you want to see it you need a Playstation and a Playstation Plus subscription which is around $49.99 per year. The subscription also comes with free downloadable games and extra contents, fully playable demo’s of the hottest new games, as well as discounted games.
Playstation isn’t the first to use it’s subscription service to drive original content. Netflix, a monthly fee based subscription movie service, has been developing their own original content for years. Hemlock Grove about werewolves has been hugely popular and the service recently inked a deal that with Dreamworks for an original series based on the Dreamworks animation film, Turbo.
Playstation has been at the top of the console war for the last five months. It’s closest rival, Xbox One, has already developed original content for it’s service as well but Playstation is the first to take on a dramatic series in full. Casting is underway now and Playstation is banking on the current love of super hero movies and t.v. series to drive Powers to a hit for Sony. Sony is also planning to release a Sony box that is similar to the Apple TV. It will stream from around the home wirelessly and allow owners to watch content on their TV from different rooms.
