Croatia and Cameroon both lost their World Cup opening games. Heading into their second match up of the tournament against one another, there was a lot on the line, win and stay in the hunt for a spot in the round of 16, lose and go home.
Well not immediately, whoever lost would still have one game left in the group stage but would be mathematically eliminated.
Right away it looked like things were going to go Croatia’s way. Just 11 minutes into the game, Ivica Olic gave the Croatians a lead and took a bit of the pressure off. Later in the first half, Cameroonn midfielder Alex Song was sent off with a red card for elbowing Mario Mandzukic in the back.
Three minutes into the second half, Ivan Perisic added a second goal.
Mandzukic added a third goal in the 61st minute with a header off a corner kick. Mandzukic struck again just 12 minutes later with an easy tap in after the Cameroon goal keeper made a save and the ball landed at his feet.
Towards the end of the second half the Cameroon team generated some chances and looked like they might get a goal out of the game but ultimately didn’t. They wound up at the bottom of the table with zero points and out of the tournament.
Brazil and Mexico are each atop the table with four points, Brazil getting the nod on goal differential. Croatia is lingering behind in third place with three points.
