During the opening round of games in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Uruguay was stunned by Costa Rica and lost the game 3-1, dropping them to the bottom of the table. England lost their opener as well, though to stiffer competition in Italy and by a smaller margin dropping them into third.
Both teams came into their second game of the World Cup looking for a win and some points to stay in the race for one of the two spots that advance to the knockout round. The only problem was that they were playing each other and only one could win.
It set a game of desperation as it was some times referred to as. It was a remarkable back and forth game with a thrilling finish. After Luis Suarez gave Uruguay the lead in the first half, it looked like England’s backs were against the wall one more time.
In the 75th minute, Wayne Rooney finally broke his World Cup scoreless drought to tie the game. Unfortunately for England, Suarez wasn’t done yet. In the 85th minute he scored to give Uruguay the lead and win.
It puts England at the bottom of the table and most likely eliminates them from the World Cup.
