If you’ve been watching this life-cycle of the NBA and have been invested in the sport since the 90s, then you’ll realize that we’re getting to the stage in the game in which the things are being taken away from us more than they’re being given. For every promising young John Wall, Derrick Rose or Kyrie Irving, the NBA sees the deterioration of Kevin Garnett, Steve Nash and so many others.

More from NBA

The day will come when the San Antonio Spurs become something that has been taken away from us, as Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Gregg Popovich cannot do what they’re doing forever. At some point, the ride is going to stop and the ticket will expire.

Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle is not about to listen to any of that though. When asked if he’d like to see Gregg Popovich retire, the Mavs coach replied that he’d rather blow the Spurs out first.

He was a little more colorful.

The Mavericks actually gave the Spurs their hardest series of the playoffs and nearly derailed history in the first round. Dallas dragged their rivals to seven games — many of which required overtime — and were the only team to force everyone to cast doubt on the Spurs.

Dallas will have a few more cracks at the Spurs while the Big 4 reign supreme, but Carlisle better get his licks in while he can as the Spurs train’s final stop is right around the bend.
