The Costa Rica team was supposed to be the doormat of Group D at the 2014 World Cup. Uruguay, England and Italy brought a combined seven World Cup trophies into this tournament and Costa Rica had just three World Cup wins.
In their opening game, Costa Rica dominated a Uruguay team without striker Luis Suarez to the tune of 3-1, shocking everyone. It could’ve been a fluke and their second game was against Italy. The Azzurri came into this tournament with four World Cup trophies, and Costa Rica with just four World Cup wins all time. The Italians have won 45 World Cup games in their history.
The Costa Ricans weren’t intimidated, and defeated Italy 1-0 thanks to a Bryan Ruiz header. Had the referee awarded a couple of penalties when a Costa Rican player went down in the box, the score line could’ve been a lot worse but they weren’t given the calls.
In the end they wouldn’t need it. The Costa Rican win keeps them at the top of the “Group of Champions.” It also seals England’s fate and eliminates them from the World Cup. Italy and Uruguay play in the final game of group play and that game will determine who joins Costa Rica in the round of 16. A draw would keep Italy ahead of Uruguay on goal differential, so Uruguay need to win to advance.
