Yes, team names are in the news, and the Washington D.C. area NFL team may or may not have an offensive team nickname, depending on which side of the argument you fall. “Redskins” is a derogatory racial slur in the eyes of some, while other maintain that it’s a tribute to the Native Americans who once inhabited the area.
That is, before the government herded and caged them on a reservation.
The team has been under a great deal of scrutiny lately, with everyone from Native American traditionalists to the U.S. government (because heaven knows they have nothing more important to occupy their time) getting involved in the dispute. The U.S. Patent Office has canceled the patent rights for the team’s name and logo, and team owner Daniel Snyder is taking a Tony Montana stance of defiance against all comers.
The argument about Washington’s team name isn’t for us to solve here. That should be a matter between Snyder and the Native American people. Suffice to say, Congress should just sit this one out and not look at it as an opportunity to put a band-aid on the gushing wound the Native Americans have been suffering with for decades upon decades.
But as possibly offensive as the Redskins name might be, believe it or not, it’s not the worst team name in the history of sports. In fact, it doesn’t even crack the top 10 in my book.
There are some team nicknames that, like the Redskins, have (or had) some particularly insensitive racial overtones, while there are other team names – some still in existence – that just leave fans shaking their heads and facepalming. Whether it be for offensive or comical reasons, some professional and college teams just have atrocious nicknames.
Which teams could have worse names than the Redskins? Glad you asked, because here is the list of the 10 worst.
