Croatia and Mexico were playing to see who would get a chance at the round of 16, and who would be going home early. It was a tough contest that saw a scoreless struggle extend into the second half and then El Tri broke through. At first a header from Mexico captain Rafa Márquez gave them the lead.
Minutes later Andrés Guardado added an insurance goal to give Mexico some breathing room. In the 82nd minute, super-substitute Javier Hernández added a third goal to take what looked like an even game and make it a blow out.

It was short lived though because Ante Rebic was shown the red card the following minute for a reckless challenge on Carlos Peña.
