According to a report from Gigaom, Mozilla is working on its own streaming stick device (seen in the photo above). The device will run on the Mozilla-developed Firefox operating system, and will be a direct competitor to the popular device from Google.
It will also support some of the apps that are currently available on Chromecast like Google Play Music. The author of the report from Gigaom added that this new device from Mozilla won’t come with the same restrictions that Google currently imposes with the Chromecast.
Google Cast SDK is limited to Android, iOS and web apps. Mozilla’s device will reportedly allow casting from the new Amazon Fire phone, Windows Phone and, possibly, desktop apps.
The report states that there is no telling when this new streaming stick won’t go on sale, nor does it even have an official name. It was supposed to be kept under wraps for “at least a few more weeks”, but with the leak of the prototype, Mozilla may be addressing it sooner rather than later.
Nothing is confirmed regarding the device, but FanSided reached out to Mozilla for comment to which the company responded with a no comment at this time response.
