The best minor league promotions are those that combine wackiness with biting satire. That’s a good way to describe the upcoming event announced by the single-A Lake County Captains. On July 2nd, the Indians’ affiliate will hold “Mark Emmert Appreciation Day” in honor of the maligned NCAA president.

This is the hilarious roster of events planned for Mark Emmert Appreciation Day:

  • All fans may transfer to a different seat but will be subject to a one inning waiting period penalty.
  • Fans that participate during in-game festivities, contests or promotions will not receive tangible prizes but instead receive the satisfaction of having participated.
  • The Captain mascot may or may not roam the stadium dishing out $100 handshakes to any fan wearing a generic college jersey, one that may or may not represent a current student-athlete.

I’d say Emmert deserves the scorn considering his recent remarks about how unpopular and unsuccessful minor league sports are. Pretty much everything Emmert does and says puts him in line to be hammered. And then there’s the hair. Don’t even get me started on the hair.

Newt Gingrich is even disturbed by the hair.

Kudos to the Lake County Captains for bringing a refreshing satiric edge to their ripping of Emmert. And thanks again for reminding us that minor league promotional people are great at what they do.
