The Jesus is one of the most memorable sleazebag characters in The Big Lebowski, and would seemingly be a great subject for a spin-off. If John Turturro has his way, that Jesus revisit will soon be making its way to the big screen.
Speaking during a master class at the Taormina Film Festival in Greece, Turturro talked about the possibility of resurrecting The Jesus for another cinematic go-around (via The Hollywood Reporter):
If I can get the permission I need, I’d like to return to that role.
Getting permission would mean having the Coen Brothers sign off on the idea, and that might be easier said than done. Rumors have surfaced in the past about Lebowski spin-offs and even a sequel but nothing has ever materialized, mostly because the Coens just don’t want to do it.
The Coens as it turns out have lots of ideas and don’t need to keep rehashing their old movies over and over like some people we know.
I personally can’t see The Jesus carrying a whole movie. He’s just too creepy and limited as a character, even with a talent like John Turturro doing the performing. I could however see The Jesus returning on the small screen, surrounded by a great ensemble, as part of a Fargo-like extension of the Lebowski universe.
A Lebowski-universe TV show with The Jesus at the center could actually be really funny, if a creative team as good as the one on Fargo could be brought on-board. A movie though? Not feeling it.
