Heading into the middle of another busy fantasy baseball week is the perfect time to swoop in and grab some quality starts from players on the waiver wire. There’s always risk in grabbing a starting pitching option and plugging them in, but with so much week remaining you have time to bounce back even from a bad outing. If you decide to boost your rotation with a waiver wire reinforcement, you can find my daily options right here on Fansided (archive here) to give you a place to start.
Here are the basic ground rules: recent results are on the final slide of this post, and my choices are always available in at least half of ESPN leagues when I pick them (each player’s ownership percentage is included in parentheses after their team name). I also include a risk and reward ranking for each selection on a scale of 1-5 with five being the most risk and the most reward.
On Wednesday, here’s where to start your pitching search:
Henderson Alvarez-Miami Marlins (36.2%)
Alvarez continues to be a rock in the Marlins’ rotation. He hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any of his last six starts as he and the Fish head to Phily to face their NL East divisional rivals.
On the season, Alvarez is 4-3 with a 2.39 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. He typically doesn’t pile up the strikeouts to make him an elite option, but he’s the top waiver target for wins and innings.
He faced Philadelphia twice this season allowing three earned runs in 13 innings and earning a pair of no-decisions. Despite his solid starts, he hasn’t won on the road yet, but he’s still the best widely available option as he looks to keep his roll going.
