Thursday is a limited schedule in Major League Baseball with 10 games on the slate, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any options if you need a starting pitcher pickup for your fantasy baseball team. In fact, there are some options with definite upside below and on the following slides. All the widely available options for Thursday are pretty high-risk, but if you’re streaming or looking for a spot starter check out these options.
If you decide to boost your rotation with a waiver wire reinforcement, you can find my daily options right here on Fansided (archive here) to give you a place to start. Here are the basic ground rules: recent results are on the final slide of this post, and my choices are always available in at least half of ESPN leagues when I pick them (each player’s ownership percentage is included in parentheses after their team name). I also include a risk and reward ranking for each selection on a scale of 1-5 with five being the most risk and the most reward.
Here’s Thursday’s top targets:
Jarred Cosart-Houston Astros (3.4%)
Cosart is coming off his best start of the year as he looks to win his fourth straight start and improve to 8-5. One of the big reasons for his recent success is his improved command demonstrated by issuing two walks or fewer in his last five starts.
His last four outings have all been quality starts but none were better than his most recent start in which he shutout the Tampa Bay Rays for eight innings on six hits while walking one and picking up a pair of strikeouts. His K numbers have been down his last two starts, but he’s been pitching well enough to still be a contributor.
On Thursday, he and the Astros close out their interleague series with the Braves at home at Minute Maid Park. Cosart is 4-1 in afternoon starts and will look to pick up a win as he takes on the still rounding into form Mike Minor with a good shot at a win if he can turn in another quality start.
