The Sacramento Kings sound as if they will retain current point guard Isaiah Thomas, who is a restricted free agent. But despite that, the Kings will still need some depth in their backcourt and according to Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee, they’ll be looking to add an additional point guard to their roster this offseason.

How exactly the Kings will do such is the larger unknown. Currently, Sacramento owns the No. 8 pick in Thursday’s 2014 NBA Draft however they’ve been rumored to be shopping the pick hard and some of the top point guards in the draft are likely to be gone come their eighth selection.

Given that, it’s possible the Kings will explore the trade market or free agency to find their desired pass-first point as Jones says they’re seeking.

Of course, point guards with a more pass-first style of play aren’t usually known to be much of a flashy pickup, so it doesn’t sound as if the Kings are planning to make a big splash in such an acquisition but are simply looking for a player who can quarterback their roster.

Isaiah Thomas, for all of his strengths, is more of a scoring point guard – though in fairness to the pint-sized guard, he can distribute when needed. However, it seems as if he’s more beneficial to the Sacramento Kings in a scoring role than in a passing role.

Jones does not go on to speculate who the Sacramento Kings will be looking to acquire, though did note a couple players in the draft that Sacramento could have interest in.
