World Cup Bracket update: France, Switzerland advance

Group E was wide open coming into Wednesday, any team could have advanced to the knockout round of the tournament. There was even a chance France, with six points, could have been eliminated, albeit it far-fetched.

Ultimately France held Ecuador to a scoreless draw to advance to the knockout round as winners of the group. They only needed one point and they got it, the red card from Antonio Valencia helped out a bit.

Switzerland and a hat-trick from Xherdan Shaqiri helped secure their spot in the knockout round as the runner-ups of Group F. That means they’ll face South American powerhouse Argentina in the “Round of 16,” while France will play Nigeria.
