World Cup bracket: USA knockout round opponent

The Untied States did it, they escaped out of the “Group of Death” and are headed to the knockout round, also known as the “round of 16.” It wasn’t pretty, the Americans lost to Germany 1-0, but a 2-1 Portugal win gave the Americans the spot in the knockout round thanks to the goal differential tie-breaker. Portugal’s 4-0 loss to Germany in the World Cup opener ultimately did them in, giving them a disadvantage in the goal differential in the first game that they couldn’t overcome.

But the Americans are on to the single-elimination portion of the tournament. As the winners of the group Germany will face the Group H runner-up. As the Group G runner-ups, the Americans will play the winner of Group H. That will be Belgium.

There is a chance that the Belgians don’t finish atop the Group H table, but it is incredibly slim and by all means the Belgians are expected to win the group. Belgium is a roster loaded with talent from some of the biggest clubs around Europe and beat the United States 4-2 in a friendly within the past couple of years.

The United States’ “Round of 16” game is on Tuesday, July 1.
