There was no doubt that Wiggins was amongst the best players in a very talented and deep 2014 NBA Draft. Ultimately the Cavaliers decided to go with Wiggins over Duke’s Jabari Parker and his Kansas teammate Joel Embiid.
At their press conference on Friday to introduce Wiggins to the media, the Cavaliers made the most Cleveland mistake possible. After discussing Wiggins’ family, Cavs play-by-play announcer Fred McLeod introduced him as “Mitchell Wiggins.”
The name wasn’t all that entirely random and out of the blue, Mitchell is his father’s name and his father is a former first-round draft pick himself. Wiggins basketball family was being discussed before introducing Andrew and obviously he was stuck on Mitchell having just spoken about him.
Still, so Cleveland of them.
The Cavaliers recovered well and the conference moved along as usual. When it came time to hold up the jersey in front of Wiggins, only a few minutes after the blunder, they had some fun with it asking which is worse, not having the jersey or messing his name.
