Saturdays are always fun for Fantasy Baseball owners and the final Saturday of June should be even more exciting than usual with 17 games on the slate due to a pair of double headers. With 34 different starting pitchers taking the mound, let’s take our daily look at what value options may be available on your league’s waiver wire.
If you decide to boost your rotation with a waiver wire reinforcement, a good place to start is my daily options right here on Fansided (archive here). Here are the basic ground rules: recent results are on the final slide of this post, and my choices are always available in at least half of ESPN leagues when I pick them (each player’s ownership percentage is included in parentheses after their team name). I also include a risk and reward ranking for each selection on a scale of 1-5 with five being the most risk and the most reward.
Here are the options to look at for Saturday:
Jonathon Niese-New York Mets (40.8%)
Niese still doesn’t get a ton of fantasy respect which can totally work in your favor when you have to hit the wire. He has been a consistent contributor of quality starts and good innings although his win total is still pretty low.
Niese has gone 4-4 this year despite picking up quality starts in 12 of 15 starts and posting a quality 2.78 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. He did get the win in his last start against the Marlins since the Mets finally got him some run support.
On Saturday, Niese starts against the Pirates in Pittsburgh against Gerrit Cole who is expected to come off the DL for the start. It’s tough to predict how effective Cole will be, but Niese is a good pick to give you a solid start if innings, WHIP, and ERA are what you’re after.
