With the 15th overall selectioin in the 2014 NHL Draft, the Dallas Stars selected defenseman Julius Honka out of Swift Current of the WHL.

Honka was ranked 15th on the final FanSided NHL Draft big board, so it doesn’t surprise me one bit that he went where he did. In fact, I fully expected Dallas to take a defenseman with their first round pick, and it just so happened that Honka was the best one available.

Honka is a very solid offensive defenseman that should become a future power-play quarterback for the Stars when he makes the full-time transition to the NHL. He has a lot of questions regarding is liability in his own end, but I feel he will improve enough in that sense to become a good NHL player.

I just don’t think he’ll make major strides in his own end to be considered a great NHL player.

His size is also a concern, but he can easily add on the weight to fill is 5’11″ frame.

Final Grade: B
