NHL Draft 2014: Winnipeg Jets draft grade

With the ninth overall selection in the 2014 NHL Draft, the Winnipeg Jets selected Nikolaj Ehlers out of Halifax of the QMJHL.

Ehlers was ranked fifth overall in the final FanSided NHL draft big board, and should prove to be tremendous value for the Jets in this spot. He’s a highly skilled forward that should have no problem boosting the Jets’ offensive prowess whenever he makes it to the NHL.

He won’t scare opponents with his talent, but he’s a player that will earn the respect of his peers much quicker than most young players do. I wouldn’t expect to see him in the NHL this year, but he should have a solid chance to make the roster for the 2015-16 season.

The only major drawback to Ehlers is his size. At 5’11″, 162lbs, Ehlers needs to put on some muscle to avoid being tossed around at the next level.

Final Grade: B+
