World Cup odds 2014: USA has 20 percent chance to beat Belgium in regulation

The United States emerged from the “Group of Death” to make the Round of 16 in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, but they remain long shots in the tournament. USA currently sits with 90-to-1 odds to win the tournament, which means no one believes they will come out on top — at least not in Vegas.

Part of the reason the United States is viewed as such a long shot is because of their next opponent in the Round of 16.

After facing the likes of Portugal and Germany in the group stage, the USA has another difficult challenge ahead in Belgium, who was a dark horse to win the World Cup when the tournament began.

If the United States can get past Belgium, their odds should significantly increase, but it will be no easy task.

In fact, the folks in Vegas don’t seem to think the USA has a real shot at coming out on top.

Belgium is being given more than a 50 percent chance to win the game against the Yanks in regulation, while the USA has just a 20 percent chance to get the win.

Here is a complete breakdown of the odds, via RJ Bell of Pregame.com:

  • Belgium win in regulation: $115 wins $100 (52% chance)
  • USA win in regulation: $100 wins $400 (20% chance)
  • Draw in regulation: $100 wins $250 (28% chance)

The good news for the United States is that they thrive in the underdog role.

When it comes to international soccer, there is no denying the country is further behind in development. Many of the top countries live and breathe soccer, while the sport is still an afterthought in the United States for the most part.

Interest in this year’s World Cup has been higher than ever, so hopefully that will lead to a surge in youth deciding to pick up soccer and allowing the United States to continue gaining ground in the international soccer scene.

For now, the USA is the underdogs. And there is nothing you can do about that.
