The United States made it into the knockout round, escaping the “Group of Death,” albeit with some bumps and bruises along the way. Center forward Jozy Altidore has been out since the first half of the opening game against Ghana with a strained hamstring. Clint Dempsey had his nose broken in that same game, and midfielder Jermaine Jones broke his nose during their group stage finale against Germany.

Jones and midfielder Alejandro Bedoya were running opposite directions on the field and didn’t notice one another.

From the Associated Press:

"… Jones has a broken nose as he expected after Thursday’s game against Germany, but he is scheduled to play in the round of 16 against Belgium on Tuesday in Salvador.…Jones won’t wear a protective mask and the fracture hasn’t caused discoloration in the area."

U.S. Soccer Federation spokesman Michael Kammarman told the Associated Press that both p[layers were checked on the field and had subsequent checks since.

“It was just a weird collision,” Bedoya said after the game, via U.S. Soccer’s website. “I had the ball and knew what I wanted to do next, but I didn’t really see him actually and we just collided. I guess it looks pretty bad on TV. I’m doing alright. I guess my head hit his nose so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s broke.”

“I don’t remember very good what happened, if we come head on head or head-on-shoulder,” Jone said after the game. “The feeling was I think it’s broken. We’ll have to see when we come back to Sao Paulo what is with my nose. If I try to breathe now, I have no chance to breath. I feel that it’s broken, but we have to wait for what the doctor says.”

That was actually his second collision of the day, but clearly the most violent. Earlier in the game while running into the box and keeping his eye on the ball, Jones ran into the referee who wasn’t paying attention either.
