The Cleveland Cavaliers have one of the youngest and brightest rosters in the NBA, but a core of Andrew Wiggins and Kyrie Irving may never happen if the former Duke talent doesn’t accept his contract extension this offseason.

More from Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cavs are expected to present Irving with a five-year contract worth around $90 million dollars, an extension that the Cavaliers point guard has seemed rather bullish on. Of course, that was before the Cavaliers brought in Andrew Wiggins, so it’s not known if Irving’s mindset has changed in recent weeks.

Regardless, if Kyrie Irving doesn’t sign the extension, Terry Pluto of Cleveland.com expects the All-Star to be traded.

"In July, the Cavs will offer Kyrie Irving the five-year maximum contract in the $90 million range. I’ve been writing this for a while, despite silly reports to the contrary. They want to know if Irving will be “all in,” to use Griffin’s phrase. If not, I expect them to trade him. Griffin hasn’t said that, but it’s a safe assumption. Irving can’t be an restricted free agent until 2015 — and unrestricted in 2016. But I doubt the Cavs will wait another year to see if Irving is indeed “all in.”"

The problem with trading Irving is you’ll never get comparable value and to make matters worse, it’s likely to be a long, drawn out process that will become a distraction to the team (say like the Kevin Love/Minnesota Timberwolves situation).

Given the talented youthful core the Cavaliers have, it would be a little odd for Irving not to accept the extension unless he simply desires to play for a different organization.
