During the second UFC event on Saturday, news surfaced that Chael Sonnen failed a second drug test that was administered by the Nevada State Athletic Commission at the beginning of June when he was still scheduled to compete at UFC 175.
It was the second failed drug test for Sonnen and this one was more troubling.
Sonnen was popped for four banned substances including human growth hormone (HGH), recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO), anastrozole and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).
In his first failed drug test, Sonnen tested positive for hCG and anastrozole.
The statement read:
“We are made aware that a second random test resulted in a positive test result for Chael Sonnen. Chael will have an opportunity to appear in front of the Nevada State Athletic Commission on July 23rd.
“We will support the commission and continue to ensure that all competitors complete on a level playing field free of performance enhancing drugs.”
Sonnen retired less than 24 hours after his first failed drug test, so the UFC will not have to worry about him needing to get licensed again in Nevada.
That said, Sonnen will need to answer questions from the NSAC and he has reportedly agreed to do just that.
