One of the smart-mouthed character’s most defining traits will not be seen in the upcoming series Constantine.
It is a well-known fact that when characters make the jump from the pages of a novel, comic book, graphic novel, or some other written form that there will almost always be some sort of slight changes made.
Unfortunately, Constantine is no different.
When the series gets started in October, the master of the occult will be without one of his most-defining character traits; his chain smoking.
According to an interview that series director Neil Marshall did with Collider, Marshall notes that this has a lot to do with network regulations.
“No we’re not. It’s the one thing, a compromise I guess. On network it’s the one thing you can’t smoke on network.” He tells Collider. “That’s one of his character traits. We’re working around that. We’re trying to get aspects of it in there as much as possible. We’ll see.”
Marshall also states that, at least in the pilot episode, they make no mention of Constantine having any form of cancer.
It is odd that they would remove one of the characters most recognizable traits from the new series; however, I guess at the end of the day rules are rules.
Now, on a much happier note, in the same interview, Marshall assures fans that they plan to make the show as dark and scary with the show as possible.
“Whatever the regulations are, you can be as dark and disturbing as you want and we’re going to go in that direction.” He tells Collider. “The intention is to be as dark and scary as possible with the show. And that was our whole kind of plan going in, to make it scary. So we’re going to explore all kinds of things. But the smoking is very frustrating. Who knows where it will go; where the story will go; where the character will go? There’s still lots of options.”
Well, at least there’s that.
Smoking or no smoking, I am still incredibly anxious to see what the series has to offer. It is always interesting to see a comic book character jump off the pages and onto the screen, whether it is in theaters or on our televisions from the comfort of our own home.
Thankfully, we don’t have too much longer to wait.
Constantine premieres on Friday, October 24th on NBC.
