Here are the basic ground rules: recent results are on the final slide of this post, and my choices are always available in at least half of ESPN leagues when I pick them (each player’s ownership percentage is included in parentheses after their team name). I also include a risk and reward ranking for each selection on a scale of 1-5 with five being the most risk and the most reward.
Here are the widely available options to target for this Tuesday:
Henderson Alvarez-Miami Marlins (48.8%)
Alvarez has been a regular on this list all season, but probably will be ineligible as he crosses the 50% threshold before this start Tuesday. He’s been very good all season and has filled in as the team’s Ace since Jose Fernandez went down with his injury.
In his 16 starts this season, Alvarez has thrown three complete game shutouts on his way to a 5-3 record with a 2.32 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. He doesn’t pile up strikeouts, and that fact alone probably keeps him from being an elite fantasy option in the near future.
On Tuesday, Alvarez will face the Phillies for the second straight start and the fourth time this season. His splits show he’s lined up for a big game since he has a 1.83 ERA in his 19.2 innings against them this season. He’s also been exceptional at home with a 1.44 ERA and a 4-1 record at Marlins Park where he’ll be in action on Tuesday.
Alvarez is a great pickup for this start and worth a staying spot in many formats.
