The NHL free agency period is open for busiess and there have been some big names switching teams in very dramatic ways. Not every big name star or veteran went to a contender but a few teams are starting to compile solid skaters in an effort to change in their fortunes next season.

One team looking to get better in the near future are the Florida Panthers and they went out and made some nice free agent signings, capping off a busy day for the front office with a big veteran signing.

According to TSN’s Aaron Ward, the Florida Panthers have won the Willie Mitchell sweepstakes and have agreed to terms with the veteran on a free agent contract.

That report was then confirmed by TSN’s NHL rumor guru Bob McKenzie, who gave details of the deal.

Mitchell was a nice part of the Los Angeles Kings two Stanley Cups and he joins a Panthers team hungry to rebuild and do so quickly. They grabbed Aaron Ekbald with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, hired a new head coach and made runs at big free agent signing like Jussi Jokinen and Dave Bolland.
