Jarome Iginla will be an unrestricted free agent at 11AM on July 1. He knows what he wants and he plans to explore the market in an effort to secure a two-year deal. If he can’t find that though, it appears Iginla will be happy to return to Boston if at all possible and play out a one year deal.

More from Boston Bruins

With that in mind, Iginla has likely seen his last days in Boston. The Bruins only have $1.6 million in cap space, per CapGeek, and they have 10 forwards under contract. Not only will the team need to shed cap space, but it will then have to devote at least some of that to warm bodies for the roster.

Renaud Lavoie from TVA Sports in Montreal had this to say about the Iginla situation.

Meanwhile, it’s not hard at all to believe that no GM in the NHL would be willing to offer a slam-dunk Hall of Fame winger a two-year deal. The question will be how much Iginla is willing to sacrifice in monetary gains in order to join a contender. He obviously couldn’t cut his salary down to nothing for the Bruins and he shouldn’t have to. But a team like St. Louis that desperately wants more scoring and holds about $15 million in cap space with only two forward vacancies? Now there’s a team that can make a play.

There are plenty of other options and Iginla has reportedly already been exploring them. Soon enough, we’ll find out what Iginla’s agent has dug up for the power forward.
