Expendables 3 gets PG-13 rating

The next installment of the Expendables franchise will be a little different than it’s predecessors. No, I’m not talking about the additions of Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, and Wesley Snipes, i’m talking about the movie goers on opening night. The MPAA has seen fit to give Expendables 3 a PG-13 rating. That means we should expect to see better box office numbers from the franchise’s third feature film.

Both Expendables and Expendables 2 opened with “R” ratings that kept anyone out of the theatre below the age of 18. Legally. Now anyone over the age of 13 will be able to watch the film without either mom or dad sharing their company. The rating also means that some of the violence will likely be toned down or that the MPAA realizes that most of the violence is now considered more or less comic book style. Blood and gore and over the top language will also be scaled down to meet the MPAA ratings requirements for PG-13.

The studio wanted a film that could be seen by a wider audience and while there has been no official reports that they demanded a PG-13 film, it was something they hoped to achieve.

In an exclusive interview with JoBlo.com, two former members of the MPAA ratings board gave some insight into the process of rating films.

"“One of the things that’s very difficult for film raters to figure out is that certain scenes or certain language can be in one film and get one rating but there can be the same in a very different film could get it a different rating due to the context of the film,” said Barry Freeman"

Expendables 3 will open nationwide on August 15th and will return Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, and the rest of the ensemble cast. A fourth film is already being planned.
