Hunter Pence: outfielder and Twitch broadcaster

What does San Francisco Giants outfielder Hunter Pence do when he’s not playing baseball? He plays video games, seemingly preferring fighting games and Hearthstone.

We know this because as Chris O’Brien of the Los Angeles Times reports, Pence has been broadcasting his gaming sessions on Twitch for the last week or so. He’s streamed an epic, 150-minute session of Hearthstone, along with some Killer Instinct and Injustice: Gods Among Us. Of course as a star athlete, he gets to do some things the rest of us don’t, like streaming one of his sessions directly from Twitch headquarters (which is in San Francisco, but still).

It doesn’t mean he’s any better at actually playing the games, though, hopefully because he spends more time perfecting his swing than his combos:

I’m not that great. I’m not like some epic player of these games.

Could this be the start of a new trend — athlete as celebrity Twitch streamer? Considering that most of us have a lot better chance attracting an audience on Twitch than we do becoming a star in professional sports, maybe we’d better hope not.

If you want to see Pence in his new second profession, his Twitch channel (which carries a warning that it’s intended for mature audiences) is easy to remember: it’s hunterpence.
