Chris Capuano signs with Colorado Rockies

The Colorado Rockies have used 12 starting pitchers in 2014 already. They acquired Jair Jurrjens in a trade this week, putting them on their way to 13 starting pitchers. On Friday the team announced that they have signed veteran left-handed pitcher Chris Capuano, the guy who might just be the 14th starting pitcher used.

Jon Heyman reported the move:

Given his versatility and experience, Capuano likely could have caught on with a contending team and been a help to them. His numbers as a reliever weren’t so bad, after all: the 35-year-old had a 4.55 ERA (4.05 FIP) in 31.2 innings with a 8.2 K/9 mark. That shows a guy who can help somebody.

It appears that Capuano prioritized an opportunity to be a starter over playing for a contending team, however. And while other big league franchises might have been able to give him a shot at the rotation, the Rockies and their tire fire of a situation can definitely offer him a spot. He can pretty much pitch in a big league rotation the moment his arm is ready to handle it.

The Rockies have gone through the guys who were supposed to be their studs and they have gone through minor league options as they keep losing starting pitchers to ineffectiveness and injuries. With the same record as the Houston Astros and a spot near the bottom of the division within their reach, this franchise just needs to find warm bodies to fill the rest of the season in the rotation.

Capuano will try to take one of those spots, presumably to re-establish his value as a starter to the rest of the league.
